Mound Technical Solutions
When the Miamisburg Mound Improvement Corporation facility in Miamisburg, Ohio closed, 2,500 workers, mostly engineers and physicists, lost their jobs. One of those workers was Doug McClelland, now founder of Mound Technical Solutions. McClelland chose to start, Mound Technical to help the Miamisburg Mound location clear its site of hazardous contamination. He developed testing equipment to measure the radioactive hydrogen remaining in the ground, water and air.
As the cleanup of the Miamisburg Mound location wound down, McClelland knew he needed to find new markets for his specialized skills. He spotted his opportunity thanks to the emphasis of the Ohio Third Frontier Fuel Cell Initiative, which advances the manufacture of fuel cells in Ohio. McClelland recognized that there were direct links between his measurement for radioactive hydrogen and the inner-workings of the fuel cell. Working with Ohio Third Frontier's Entrepreneurial Signature Program, which is administered by the Dayton Development Coalition, Doug received advice on how to adapt his technology to determine applications for fuel cell testers, find strategic partners, and receive guidance getting his new line of products successfully to market.
Now, with continuing support from Ohio Third Frontier and the sustained guidance of the Entrepreneurial Signature Program, Mound Technical Solutions has grown to employ 12 people, and is still adding to its product line. McClelland comments that "Without the leadership of the Ohio Third Frontier Program, my ability to transform my business to serve the Fuel Cell industry would not have happened," McClelland said. "[We're] excited about the future of Ohio and the future of Mound Technical Solutions."
